We understand that peoples unique tastes and styles can be realised with the almost infinite amount of products and options available today when it comes to design, colours and functionality.

Selecting a radiator

Radiators are one of the most important elements of any central heating installation, and a well-specified radiator is essential to ensuring that the homeowner does not waste money or energy on overheating their home.

Capital Plumbing & Heating Services Ltd are able to offer a multitude of radiators and towel rails, which cater for all tastes, styles and requirements. Our wide range of supplier’s means that you will be able to find just what you need and want to complement your personality and your property. Not only in terms of heat output performance and controllability, but in terms of all shapes, styles and colours that you probably never knew existed.

Heat loss calculations are crucial in order to calculate the required radiator output and size for any particular room. The final heat loss figure (in Watts) can be matched up with a radiator of a similar or slightly higher output. If this figure is underestimated, the room will not reach the required temperature in the depths of winter at a temperature of -1°C, and the house will be under heated. If it is over estimated, the room will be overheated and uneconomical (unless Thermostatic Radiator Valves are Fitted. For the most accurate Heat loss calculations Capital Plumbing & Heating Services Ltd’s engineer or designer should be consulted.

When calculating the heating requirement of a room, it is important to consider other factors which can affect the rate of heat loss, for example:

  • 1. Outdoor temperature. The amount of heat lost from a building will depend on its location. During a typical winter in the UK, temperatures can range from -6°C in towns and cities and -8°C on the coast. The lower the outdoor air temperature, the higher the heat loss is.

  • 2. Building location and wind conditions. Buildings situated in exposed areas and in windy regions lose more heat than identical buildings located in a settlement protected from extreme weather conditions.

  • 3. Age of building. Modern buildings are generally better insulated than old more traditional buildings. They have a low rate of heat loss and therefore need less heating to maintain a comfortable living temperature.

  • 4. Windows and glazing. High quality windows reduced the rate of heat loss and cut the fuel costs for heating the home.

  • 5. Position of external walls. Rooms without any external walls will have a lower rate of heat loss.

  • 6. Indoor temperature. The purposes for which the room is to be used should also be considered, the higher the required temperature is, the larger the radiator will need to be.

  • 7. Heating parameters. In most cases of heat loss the figures are stated according to the industry standard EN442. i.e. the water temperature, flow and return and the indoor temperature are calculated at the level of 75/65/20°C. If the installation operates within different parameters from the ones given or the indoor temperature is lower or higher than 20°C, correction factors must be used in accordance with these calculations.

The physical size of a radiator is also important, so that the room looks well balanced. There is nothing worse than having a small but high output radiator placed against a large blank wall. In terms of room aesthetics, it is better to pick a larger dimensioned radiator with a lower output per square metre. If a radiator is to be covered; for example, by curtains, the radiator should be significantly bigger to account for reduced heat transfer.
